Physical Chemistry (1974-1999)

since 2000: part of the Institute of Chemistry

Since 1969 the Institute of Physical Chemistry was placed at Heinrichstrasse 28

In this era Josef SCHURZ was head of the institute (venia). Before his Graz era, he was head of the institute of macromolecular chemistry in Darmstadt, Germany. His research interest was directed mainly to the investigation of high molecular compounds.

With the new university organization (UOG75) the institute was splitted in divisions: the biophysical division (head: Ingrid Pilz), electronics (head: Hans Leopold), and macromolecular chemistry.

In his era the following chemists got the venia of physical chemistry:

Peter ZIPPER (born 1941 in Vienna) got his doctoral degree in 1970 as student of Kratky and obtained the venia for physical chemistry in 1982. His research themes are scattering investigations.

Otto GLATTER (born 1945 in Weiz), head of this institute in the next era and of the institute of chemistry since 2000, studied physics at the university of technology of Graz and got his doctoral degree in 1972 as student of Otto Kratky. In 1979 he obtained the venia for experimental physics on physical scattering experiments.

Christoph KRATKY (born 1946 in Graz) got his doctoral degree at the ETH Zürich. In 1985 he obtained the venia for physical chemistry. Later he was appointed as professor of physical chemistry; his research deals with x-ray structure analysis.

Volker RIBITSCH (born 1948 in Graz) got his doctoral degree as student of Schurz. In 1991 he obtained the venia for physical chemistry. His research deals with rheological investigations.

Jürgen LENZ (born 1933 in Hamburg) obtained the venia legendi in 1985 for physical chemistry of high polymers.

Karl MÜLLER (born 1947 in Graz) obtained in 1985 the venia legendi for physical chemistry of biological macromolecules.

In this era, Otto GLATTER was elected head of the institute. His research interests are scattering investigations of macro molecules. (More data and venia:, head of the institute of chemistry since 2000)

Christoph KRATKY (venia) was appointed as ordinary professor of physical chemistry in 1995 and established a research group of structural biology.

In this era, three chemists got the venia:

Ulrike WAGNER (born 1960 in Mödling/Vienna) got her doctoral degree in 1987 as student of Kratky. In 1997 she obtained the venia for physical chemistry; her research deals with stucture biology, especially X-ray analysis of biological macro molecules.

Anton HUBER (born 1958 in Haus/Ennstal) got his doctoral degree in 1987 as student of Schurz and Esterbauer. In 1998 he obtained the venia for physical chemistry; his research deals with polymer analysis and characterization, in particular with dimensions, conformation and interactive properties of polysaccharides in aqueous media.

Ruth PRASSL (nee Mandl, born 1959 in Klagenfurt) got her doctoral degree in 1986 as student of Schurz. In 1999 she obtained the venia for physical chemistry.
