Chemical laboratory for students of biology (4h/week)


Abstract: Before starting with the practical work, the students have to show their knowledge about safety in the chemical laboratory and general laboratory operationes and techniques. Then 16 selected examples of practical work have to be performed, together with oral and written examinations about the theoretical basis of these examples. After finishing the practical work, a manual covering the 16 examples has to be written, where both observations and analytical results have to be discussed. The 16 samples are: Redox processes of inorganic and organic compounds, photometric analysis of tensides, ion exchange chromatography, column- and thin layer chromatography of natural plant products, photochemical reactions and chemoluminescence, synthetic inorganic and organic chemistry, gravimetry, synthesis of azo dyes, qualitative and quantitative analysis, titration, pH-value, reaction and dissolution heat, equilibrium of distribution, polymerization, distillation of vine, isolation of caffeine.
Target: Performance of simple chemical operations in synthesis and analytics. Deepening of the chemical comprehension.
Methods: Laboratory course under the guidance and supervision of university teachers
Lecture notes: Textbook with the description of all experiments, with the theoretical background and a general part (practical techniques, security, chemical calculations)
Literature: Textbooks of general, inorganic, analytical and organic chemistry
Examinations.: Evaluation of the practical work, protocol about the performed experiments, and oral and written tests.
